How Much Does a Kenya Coast Holiday Cost? A Realistic Budget Guide
Transparent budget guide to Kenya's coast: verified park and rail fees, worked 5–14 night budgets and an interactive holiday cost calculator.
By Bernd Trompell · · 15 min read
Kenya's coast accommodates almost every travel style: simple guesthouses a short walk from the sand, mid-range hotels, full-service resorts and staffed private villas. What your holiday costs depends less on the coastline itself than on the choices you stack on top of it — destination, season, accommodation category, group size, transport, meals and activities.
This guide compares the five main coastal destinations — Diani Beach, Watamu, Kilifi, Malindi and Mombasa — explains what drives costs in each, and gives you worked budgets for five, seven, ten and fourteen nights plus an interactive calculator for your own numbers. We are transparent about our data: official fees are quoted from their published sources with the date checked, while accommodation and food figures are clearly labelled illustrative assumptions, because no verified like-for-like market averages exist.

Quick Answer: How Much Does a Kenya Beach Holiday Cost?
A Kenya beach holiday can cost almost anything, which is why honest ranges need assumptions. Using our illustrative mid-range scenario — a hotel room at KES 12,000 per night, food at KES 1,500 per person per day, return airport transfers and a modest activities budget — two travellers sharing a room would spend roughly KES 148,000 (about KES 74,000 per person) for seven nights, excluding international flights. Budget travellers using guesthouses and self-catering can spend far less; premium resorts and private villas cost more. Use the calculator below with your own quotes for a real estimate.
What Determines the Cost of a Kenya Coast Holiday?
Eight factors decide your total. Accommodation category is the largest: a guesthouse room and a staffed private villa differ by an order of magnitude. Destination matters at the margins — each town has its own mix of property types. Season moves prices everywhere, with peak holiday periods commanding the highest rates. Group size changes the mathematics completely, because whole-property pricing rewards sharing while per-room pricing does not.
Length of stay scales accommodation and food roughly linearly, but not transport. Domestic transport — airport transfers, inter-destination travel, domestic flights or the SGR — is a fixed block per journey. Food ranges from self-catering groceries to hotel restaurants. Activities and park fees add up per person. Finally, international flights are a separate budget entirely: they depend on your origin, and we exclude them from every example in this guide.
Comparing Coastal Destinations
Diani Beach has the coast's widest accommodation range: guesthouses, apartments, mid-range hotels, large resorts and the deepest selection of private villas. Restaurants and activities are concentrated here, which means more choice at every price point — and more temptation. Transport is straightforward via Ukunda airstrip or the road from Mombasa.
Watamu is a smaller village destination where costs centre on the marine park, Mida Creek and Gedi ruins. Accommodation runs from resorts to serviced apartments; dining is more limited than Diani but covers the essentials. Malindi offers town conveniences and a broad dining scene alongside its marine park, with town hotels, coastal resorts and villas in the wider area.
Kilifi suits a slower, more independent style: private houses, cottages and suites, often creek-side, with self-catering common and local transport by tuk-tuk. Mombasa splits into two cost profiles — city hotels with urban dining, and the northern beach districts of Nyali and Bamburi with resort-style pricing. We deliberately rank no destination as “cheapest”: each has budget and premium options, and the property you choose matters more than the town it sits in.

Destination Cost Comparison Table
The table below uses our illustrative nightly assumptions — the same figures that power the worked examples and calculator — to show how the destinations compare in character and cost structure. These are planning assumptions, not verified market averages: no statistically representative price survey of the coast exists, and we will not invent one. The official fees in the final column are verified and dated.

Accommodation Costs
Understand the pricing unit before comparing anything. Guesthouses and hotels price per room per night, usually for two people. Resorts price per room or per person, sometimes with meal plans included. Apartments price per unit. Private villas price per whole property per night, regardless of how many bedrooms you use — which is why a villa that looks expensive for a couple can be remarkably good value for ten guests.
Check what the rate includes: breakfast, half board or full board change the real comparison against self-catering. Ask about cleaning fees, taxes and security deposits, and expect seasonal rates — peak periods cost more everywhere. Occupancy limits are real: a room sleeps two, a villa sleeps its stated maximum, and exceeding either is not a saving, it is a booking problem.
For groups, whole-property pricing often beats multiple hotel rooms on both cost and shared space; our group holiday cost guide works through the arithmetic for six to twelve guests. For couples and solo travellers, per-room pricing usually wins. Our villa rental guide explains how to compare villa quotes properly.
Food and Dining Costs
Food is the most controllable part of a coastal budget. Self-catering with supermarket and market shopping is the cheapest approach and suits apartments and villas. Local restaurants offer excellent value away from the beachfront strip; hotel restaurants and resort dining cost more but add convenience. Our illustrative assumption of KES 1,500 per person per day covers self-catering with occasional local restaurant meals — adjust it upward for resort dining, downward for strict self-catering.
Private chef arrangements sit between the two: at staffed villas, chef services may be included in the rate while groceries are charged separately at cost — confirm the split in writing before booking, and never assume every villa includes a chef. Meal plans at resorts simplify budgeting but limit your restaurant choices; compare the plan price against what you would actually spend eating out.
Transport Costs
Transport splits into arrival, local and inter-destination costs. Arrival depends on your gateway: flights to Ukunda put you minutes from Diani; Moi International and the Miritini SGR terminus require a road transfer south. Kenya Railways publishes its Madaraka Express fares officially — Nairobi to Mombasa is KES 1,000 in economy and KES 3,000 in first class per the current fare table — while domestic flight prices vary by date and airline, so check live fares for your dates.
Local transport is tuk-tuks and taxis: inexpensive per ride, but they accumulate. Inter-destination travel is where budgets grow — each change of base adds a private transfer or rental-car day, which is why our ten and fourteen-night examples carry higher transport allowances. Our guide to getting to Diani Beach and Mombasa Airport transfer guide cover the south-coast legs in detail, and the Kenya coast itinerary explains how routing affects total transport spend.
Activities and Excursion Costs
The beach itself is free; everything organised has a price. The verified anchor is the Kenya Wildlife Service conservation fee schedule effective 1 October 2025: the marine parks — Kisite Mpunguti, Watamu, Mombasa, Malindi, Kiunga and Diani Chale — charge non-resident adults USD 25 and children USD 15 per day, while Shimba Hills National Reserve charges non-resident adults USD 50 and children USD 25. East African citizens and Kenyan residents pay substantially less in KES. Boat hire, guides and diving are charged separately by operators, so a marine excursion's total is the park fee plus the operator's price.
Cultural attractions such as Fort Jesus charge their own entry fees through the National Museums of Kenya. Day trips bundle transport, fees and guiding at prices that vary by operator — get written quotes. Our day trips guide describes the main excursions; treat every package price as operator-specific and confirm inclusions before paying.

Five-Night Kenya Coast Holiday Budget
Our first worked example: two travellers, five nights in Diani Beach, one mid-range hotel room at an illustrative KES 12,000 per night, food at KES 1,500 per person per day across six calendar days (arrival and departure days both involve meals), return airport transfers at an illustrative KES 24,000, a KES 6,000 activities allowance and KES 10,000 miscellaneous.
Every figure in the table below is computed by the same arithmetic module that powers the interactive calculator, so the examples and the tool can never disagree.
| Accommodation | KES 60,000 |

| Food | KES 18,000 |
| Transport | KES 24,000 |
| Activities | KES 6,000 |

| Per person | KES 59,000 |
| Per person per night | KES 11,800 |
2 travellers · 5 nights · 6 food days. Illustrative assumptions, not quotes.
Seven-Night Kenya Coast Holiday Budget
The same two travellers, same assumptions, seven nights. Accommodation and food scale with the extra nights while transport stays fixed — which is why the per-person-per-night figure falls slightly as trips lengthen within one destination.
| Accommodation | KES 84,000 |
|---|---|
| Food | KES 24,000 |
| Transport | KES 24,000 |
| Activities | KES 6,000 |
| Miscellaneous | KES 10,000 |

| Per person | KES 74,000 |
| Per person per night | KES 10,571 |
2 travellers · 7 nights · 8 food days. Illustrative assumptions, not quotes.
Ten-Night Kenya Coast Holiday Budget
Ten nights, still two travellers, but now two bases: Diani Beach plus a north-coast destination such as Watamu. The inter-base transfer adds an illustrative KES 12,000 to transport, and the activities allowance rises to KES 9,000 for the marine park excursion. Note that the longer trip does not automatically cost less per night — the second transfer offsets the dilution of the airport transfer.
| Accommodation | KES 120,000 |
|---|---|
| Food | KES 33,000 |
| Transport | KES 36,000 |
| Activities | KES 9,000 |
| Miscellaneous | KES 10,000 |
| Trip total | KES 208,000 |
| Per person | KES 104,000 |
| Per person per night | KES 10,400 |
2 travellers · 10 nights · 11 food days. Illustrative assumptions, not quotes.
Fourteen-Night Kenya Coast Holiday Budget
Fourteen nights, two travellers, three bases — for example Diani, Mombasa and Watamu. Two inter-base transfers bring the transport allowance to an illustrative KES 48,000, activities to KES 12,000 and miscellaneous to KES 15,000. Compare this with a single-base fourteen-night stay: dropping the two inter-base transfers would save KES 24,000 and two half-days of travel, a trade-off worth making consciously.
| Accommodation | KES 168,000 |

| Transport | KES 48,000 |
| Activities | KES 12,000 |
| Miscellaneous | KES 15,000 |
| Trip total | KES 288,000 |
| Per person | KES 144,000 |
| Per person per night | KES 10,286 |

Interactive Kenya Coast Holiday Budget Calculator
Enter your own figures below. The destination selector labels your scenario only — it does not change any price, because the calculator contains no live destination pricing. Defaults are the same illustrative assumptions used in the worked examples.
Food days equal nights plus one, because arrival and departure days both involve meals; if your flights make that untrue, adjust the daily food figure accordingly.
Illustrative defaults, not live prices. Food uses 8 calendar days for 7 nights. The destination choice labels your scenario only — it does not change any figure.

How Much Does a Family Holiday Cost?
Family budgets hinge on children's ages and individual provider policies. Room sharing keeps accommodation flat — a family room or a villa costs the same whether two or five of you sleep in it — while per-person charges such as park fees, flights and some meal plans scale with each child. Many providers charge reduced child rates, but the age cut-offs differ everywhere, so verify each policy directly.
Self-catering and a private chef arrangement often suit families better than restaurant dining for every meal. Our family holiday guide and large family guide cover the planning side in detail.
How Much Does a Group Holiday Cost?
Groups unlock the coast's best accommodation economics: a whole-property villa rate divided by eight or twelve guests routinely undercuts per-room hotel pricing, and shared transfers and chef arrangements split the same way. The detailed arithmetic — eight worked budgets for six to twelve guests, with an editable calculator — lives in our Diani group holiday cost guide; we deliberately do not duplicate it here.
Ways to Reduce Holiday Costs
Compare travel dates first: the same property can cost substantially less outside peak periods. Check total accommodation cost rather than nightly rates — a villa's whole-property price only makes sense divided by heads. Self-cater some meals, compare transfer options before booking, and prioritise two or three activities you genuinely want rather than filling every day.
Reduce destination changes: each one costs a transfer and half a day. Verify inclusions in writing — breakfast, housekeeping, taxes and transfers change real costs between apparently similar quotes. Finally, compare booking terms: flexible rates and direct booking conditions differ. None of this guarantees savings; it guarantees you will know what you are paying for.
Common Budgeting Mistakes
Forgetting transfers is the classic error: the airport journey and every inter-base move belong in the budget. Comparing per-room and whole-villa rates incorrectly comes next — always convert to a per-person figure for your actual group. Ignoring groceries undermines self-catering budgets; the villa kitchen is only cheaper if you count the shopping.
Underestimating excursions and forgetting park fees catch many travellers — the verified KWS fees above are per person, per day, before the boat. Ignoring seasonal price changes means the quote you saw in May may not hold in December. Failing to budget for additional transport — the tuk-tuks, the day-trip pickups — adds a steady drip of unplanned spending. And excluding contingency leaves no room for the unexpected: we suggest around ten percent.
Planning a Group Holiday on Kenya's Coast?
If Diani Beach is part of your plan, Zavani is our own private villa there. It accommodates up to twelve guests across six bedrooms arranged in two three-bedroom units — three bedrooms in the main house and three smaller bedrooms in the guest cottage. The villa sits approximately 300 metres from the beach: a short walk, not beachfront.
Chef services and daily housekeeping are included in the stay, while groceries are paid for separately. We publish no nightly rates here because rates depend on your dates and arrangements — enquire about your dates and we will give you a written quote, or explore the villa for photographs and details first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Kenya beach holiday cost?
It depends on your choices, so honest answers need assumptions. In our illustrative mid-range scenario — a KES 12,000 hotel room, KES 1,500 food per person per day, return transfers and modest activities — two travellers spend roughly KES 148,000 for seven nights excluding international flights. Guesthouses and self-catering cost far less; resorts and private villas cost more. Use the calculator with your own quotes.
Is Diani Beach expensive?
Diani spans the full range: guesthouses, mid-range hotels, resorts and private villas. It is not inherently expensive — it simply has the coast's widest choice, including premium options. A budget guesthouse stay in Diani can cost less than a resort stay in a cheaper destination.
Is Watamu cheaper than Diani?
Not reliably. Both destinations offer budget to premium accommodation, and no verified like-for-like price comparison exists. Watamu's marine park excursions add per-person fees; Diani's larger restaurant scene can raise or lower food spending depending on your choices. Compare written quotes for your specific dates and properties.
How much should I budget for seven nights on Kenya's coast?
Our illustrative mid-range seven-night example for two travellers totals roughly KES 148,000 (about KES 74,000 per person), excluding international flights. Budget travellers using guesthouses and self-catering can plan well below that; premium resort stays sit well above. The worked examples and calculator in this guide let you build your own figure.
How much does food cost on Kenya's coast?
Our illustrative planning figure is KES 1,500 per person per day for self-catering with occasional local restaurant meals. Resort dining and beachfront restaurants cost more; strict self-catering from supermarkets and markets costs less. At staffed villas, confirm whether chef services are included and groceries charged separately.
Are private villas cheaper for groups?
Often, yes. A whole-property rate divided among eight to twelve guests frequently undercuts the cost of multiple hotel rooms, and shared transfers and chef arrangements split the same way. For couples or solo travellers, per-room pricing usually wins. Our group cost guide works through the arithmetic in detail.
What is the cheapest time to visit Kenya's coast?
The rainy seasons — the long rains of March to May and the short rains of October to December — generally bring lower demand and lower rates, with the coastal rainfall peak expected in May. These are seasonal windows, not guarantees, and conditions vary week to week. Our seasonal guides explain the trade-offs.
How much should I budget for transport?
For a single-base Diani holiday, our illustrative allowance is KES 24,000 per group for return airport transfers plus local tuk-tuks. Each change of base adds an inter-destination transfer — we allow an illustrative KES 12,000 per move. The SGR from Nairobi costs a verified KES 1,000 economy or KES 3,000 first class per person; domestic flight prices vary by date.
Are activities included in hotel or villa prices?
Almost never. Park fees, boat trips, diving and excursions are charged separately by operators and parks. The verified KWS marine park fee is USD 25 per non-resident adult per day, before boat hire. Always confirm what any package includes in writing.
